ABILENE, Texas — Firefighters are working to put out a fire at Pine Street Salvage in north Abilene.

The fire started shortly after 1 a.m. Wednesday in the 3800 block of Pine Street.

Crews were still on scene more than six hours later.

Huge flames lit up the night sky.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a large pile of various materials on fire inside the salvage yard.

Firefighters worked to protect the heavy machinery in the area until it could be moved to a safe location.

Ladder trucks are currently being used to attack the fire from above due to the size of the pile.

TXDOT has closed Pine Street.

This closure is expected to last until late morning or early afternoon.

According to the KTXS crews at the scene, at least three ladder trucks were used in the aerial attack.

South winds caused issues, spreading the fire north.

Responding trucks also had problems accessing the fire, due to nearby businesses.

There have been no injuries reported.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
